JAMES K. THOME has vast trial experience in a variety of liability, insurance and property matters. Jim has tried more than one hundred cases, to conclusion, before juries. He has specific expertise in complex litigation involving construction, employment law and insurance coverage. In addition, he handles legal matters involving advertising injury claims and intellectual property. Although based in the metropolitan Detroit area, he has handled matters for clients throughout the state of Michigan.

Jim graduated from the University of Michigan in 1970 with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics. He served in the U.S. Army until 1972. That service included a tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam with the 18th Military Police Brigade. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in 1975. He is admitted to practice law before all Michigan courts and administrative tribunals, all federal courts in the state of Michigan, the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Jim is a Shareholder with Vandeveer Garzia and a member of the firm’s Management Committee.  He currently serves as the firm’s President.

Jim is a member of the Negligence Section and Intellectual Property Law Section of the Michigan State Bar, the Oakland County Bar Association and the Grand Rapids Bar Association.  He is also a member of the Litigation Section and the Torts and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association.  In addition, he belongs to the Defense Research Institute and the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, Inc.

He serves as a case evaluator for the Wayne County and Oakland County Circuit Courts. He has arbitrated and mediated disputes privately at the request of other attorneys.

Mr. Thome has received the "AV" rating, the highest rating recognized by the Martindale Hubbell Peer Review rating system.  He has been designated a Super Lawyer in the state of Michigan in the area of Construction Litigation every year since the inception of that program, a process that involves surveys to identify top attorneys.
